This handwoven throw/blanket is made with yak wool obtained from the Changthang area of Ladakh. It is very soft and light and will keep you warm and cosy on winter evenings.
As it is made on a handloom, there may be small variations in size. There may also be some inconsistencies in weaving and dyeing, which add to the shawl's character.
We will ship the shawl within 3 working days of receiving the order.
We make soft woollen stoles for women in the Himalayas. They are soft, warm and full of character. They can be worn with both traditional and modern clothing. They are easy to style and suitable for daily wear, travel, or special occasions.
We make two kinds of woollen scarves: some are made with a blend of 75% merino wool (19 microns) and 25% Himalayan wool (21 microns) from Himachal Pradesh. Others are made with a blend of 75% very soft merino (17 microns) and 25% Himalayan wool (21 microns). While both types are softer than scarves available in the market, the latter are especially soft and light.
We weave stoles in twill, herringbone and diamond patterns. They are woven in small batches of 8-10 pieces at a time, ensuring that each stole receives care and attention during its making.
After dyeing, the yarn is woven on traditional looms in Rampur village in the foothills of the Himalayas. The weaving is done by Mohammed Hassan and Mohammed Furqan, both from traditional weaving families. Handweaving gives the fabric a natural texture and a soft finish.
Our stoles are known for their colours, which we obtain from natural dyes. The yarn is dyed in the Himalayas, from natural materials such as madder roots, shellac and indigo.
These dyes give soft and lasting shades, unlike chemical dyes which produce sharp and harsh shades.
Our dyeing is done by hand, in small batches. Each batch produces slightly different results, and no two batches are identical. Hand-dyeing also means that the dyeing is not absolutely uniform; sometimes there are small variations in shade. This should not be considered a dyeing defect but is part of the beauty of handmade work.
We make two sizes of stoles.
The standard size is approximately 86 inches (218 cm) long and 24 inches (61 cm) wide.
The smaller size is approximately 80 inches (203 cm) long and 20 inches (51 cm) wide.
Both sizes have tassels about 3 inches long.
The larger stole gives fuller coverage and can be wrapped in many ways. The smaller size is lighter and easier to carry. Both are designed for comfort and everyday use.
Our stoles differ from those available on the market in many ways. Firstly, they are made from pure sheep wool, with no synthetics. The blend of merino and Himachal wool that we prepare ourselves gives them softness and character. Secondly, not only are the stoles handwoven, but most are also made from hand-spun wool. Thirdly, they are coloured with natural dyes, which produce soft, attractive colours. As we do not use chemical dyes, our stoles are also safer to wear against the skin.
