Himalayan Weavers make handwoven shawl and stole from alpaca wool.

Alpaca fibre is a premium material used for making fine shawls and stoles. It is superior to merino wool as it is softer, lighter and warmer.

The fibre comes from alpaca, a native animal of the Andes in South America, mainly Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador. These animals are raised at altitudes above 3,500 meters. The cold mountain climate encourages the growth of a very soft, highly insulating fleece.

The most important source of alpaca fibre is Peru. It accounts for nearly 80% of global production. Smaller quantities come from Bolivia, Chile, and Ecuador. A small but growing production also exists in the USA, UK, Australia, and Italy.

The fibre is collected by shearing the animal once a year. Each animal produces about 2 kg of usable fibre after cleaning and washing. This small yield and special qualities are the reasons it remains a premium material.

alpaca wool dyed with natural dyes, which Himalayan weavers will use for making shawls.

Alpaca shawls are highly desirable because they provide a cosy and warm feeling without the bulk of a woollen shawl. They are also less itchy than wool and are suitable for people who are allergic to wool.

Alpaca wool products are still rare in India. Himalayan Weavers are among the few, and possibly the only ones, making handwoven alpaca shawls and stoles. We use baby alpaca fibre imported from Peru. It is extremely soft with a premium feel. We blend it with 25% fine merino wool to give it strength and durability. This blend is perfect for hand-weaving shawls and stoles.

Our alpaca shawls and stoles are coloured with natural dyes such as madder, tesu flowers, harada, indigo and shellac. We are sure that you would love their colour, feel and warmth.

Our alpaca shawls and stoles are handwoven on traditional looms.

Shawls are 90 inches (229 centimetres) long and 36 inches (91 centimetres) wide.

Standards Stoles are 86 inches (218 centimetres) long and 24 inches (61 centimetres) long.

Small stoles are 80 inches (203 centimetres) long and 20 inches (centimetres) wide.

Some of them have 3-inch (7-centimetre) long tassels.
