This shawl is very special as it is made of wool yarn hand spun by Bhotia ladies in village Dunda, near Uttarkashi. The yarn is hand dyed with natural dyes and then hand woven into this beautiful shawl.

There may be small variations in size as it is made on a handloom. There may also be some inconsistencies in weaving and dyeing, which add to the character of the shawl. The length is about 90 inches (229 cms) and width 36 inches (91 cms). There are also tassels of roughly 4 inches (10cms) length.

We will ship the shawl within 3 working days of receiving the order. If you are in India, we will ship by a courier or Speed Post. If you are outside India, we ship by DHL/FedEx.

We produce beautiful pure yak wool shawls, stoles and scarves. They are hand-woven by traditional weavers in villages around us, on simple looms.

Yak wool is very special. It has excellent properties, making it an ideal material for shawls, stoles and scarves. It is very soft and warm and will keep you nicely warm in cold winters. It also breathes well and does not produce static, so it is very comfortable to wear. In fact, yak wool products are almost as soft and warm as pashminas but cost a lot less. Also, the yak is one of the most sustainable wool-producing animals as it puts comparatively lower stress on grazing pastures.

Most yak wool comes in two shades: black and dark brown. We do not dye yak wool and most of our products are dark brown.

Yak wool products are among the most exciting we have made. We are sure you would love them

What is Yak wool?

Yak is found in high-altitude areas in many parts of the world. The most important sources of yak wool are China, Mongolia and India.  Our yak wool comes from the Changthang region in Ladakh, and Kinnaur in Himachal Pradesh.

Yaks are kept by Changpa nomads in the Changthang region of Ladakh. For them these animals are crucial livestock, providing them with milk, meat, leather, material for making tents, and of course wool. They are also used as pack animals. As there is a scarcity of wood in the area, yak dung is also used as a fuel for cooking and heating.

Like the pashmina goat, the yak develops a fine and soft down next to its skin to protect against the cold conditions of its habitat. It is adapted to survive the harsh cold weather of Himalayan deserts at a height of 3000 meters to 5000 meters. The winter temperature in these places can go as low as minus 50 centigrade (minus 58 Fahrenheit). The yak’s coat can withstand these temperatures. It consists of an outer layer of coarse long hair and an inner layer of very fine down (15-20 microns) which preserves Yak’s body heat. It is the down that is used for making Yak Wool shawls and other products. The outer layer is used by nomads for making ropes and tents.

Yak wool is collected by hand combing during the summer. On average a yak produces 1-1.5 kgs of wool. This is hand processed to separate the coarse hair from the fine down. On average 0.5 kg of fine down wool is obtained from a yak. Once cleaned, the down is converted into fine yarn which is handwoven into shawls, stoles and scarves.

Yak’s wool is a perfect fibre. It is breathable, odour resistant, and naturally anti-bacterial. Like merino wool, yak wool has a remarkable capacity to absorb moisture from the body and release it into the environment. Therefore, products made from yak wool helps the body to regulate temperature and give more comfortability than other natural fibers because of their insulating property.

We are very proud of our Yak wool shawls and other products.
